Meeting Place

Method : Creative writing, voice recordings, processing, arduino, DIY-microphone.

Year : 2013

Meeting places are used by numerous people. Although they share the same space, these people do not know each other. I envision the floating individuals in the web as people in the public space.

In this work, I try to approach the physical distance of human connectivity through the gradual sound replacement. The replacement is previously recorded sounds with new ones. Within this idea, I exhibited this project by using 4 white paper cups and one red paper cup and the recorded sounds. The recordings are various versions of voice recordings of my haiku-like writings, and participating audience’s voices and ambient sounds around him. The white-object resonates pre-recorded audio files. The red-object is for audience member who want to record his/her voice and surrounded sounds. Then the recorded phrase replaces one of the preexisting phrases. The recorded phrase can be listened to via 2 of the 4 white-object. The two other white-object, which begin by playing identical recorded phrases, will play gradually different sounds, while other two white-object keep playing the original phrases.

As people leaned on each one of the white cups, they listened to the recorded voices clearly, but they could only hear buzzing sounds when they stepped back from it. To create a discernible cyber space to the public, I utilize the sounds.
