Solar Arcade (v.1 and v.2)

Method : interactive science education installation

Site : Fiske Planetarium, Boulder, CO

Year : 2019 (v.1) / 2020 (v.2)

Role: concept design, project management, visual deliverables.

Solar Arcade is an interactive science-education installation. The project is a visualization of a ‘solar arcade’ which is a collection of coronal loops on the sun’s surface. For this collaboration, I led the project procedure, balancing and managing the team collaborative workloads in order to meet our deadline. Further, I contributed my prior work experience to this project, including teaching physical computing to the team, creating the visual deliverables, and creating the video documentation of the project. Solar Arcade emulates the concept of the ‘solar arcade on the sun’ through our physical manifestation that visitors can walk through and interact with.

As a designer and project manager, I want to make an interactive science exhibit that helps visitors imagine themselves under/inside the magnetic fields, as if they stand under the solar arcade on the surface of the sun. The ‘feeling of being somewhere’ is an important concept I wanted to recreate in this installation piece because the sun is an unapproachable world where we cannot be in reality, but only observe and imagine. It is important, both to the planetarium and me as an artist,  to stimulate experiences that situates participants in something that would be impossible to experience otherwise.
